MasterAssist ® Plus
Services
The MasterAssist® Plus programme will provide you, your Spouse and Dependents with additional security and peace of mind when you travel. MasterAssist Plus will provide eligible Butterfield / AAdvantage® Platinum MasterCard® cardholders with:
- Medical Expense Reimbursement
- Emergency Medical Evacuation
- Repatriation of Remains
- Hotel Convalescence Costs and
- Emergency Family Travel Costs, when you charge common carrier transportation to your Butterfield / AAdvantage® Platinum MasterCard® card
The MasterAssist® Plus program additionally offers you a cashless payment feature, which provides for direct payment of covered medical expenses and/or emergency medical evacuation costs to the medical service provider without the need for any disbursement from the you, provided you request the service from the MasterCard Assistance Center at the time of receiving medical services.
Eligible Persons
All Butterfield / AAdvantage® Platinum MasterCard® cardholders, their spouse and dependents are automatically offered this programme at no additional cost. You must charge your common carrier transportation to your Butterfield / AAdvantage® Platinum MasterCard® card.
Important Information
The MasterAssist Plus benefits are in addition to any valid and collectible insurance or other available form of indemnity. This includes treatment paid foror furnished underany individual or group policy, or other service or medical pre-payment plan arranged through the employer to the extent so furnished or paid, or under any mandatory government programme or facility set-up for treatment without cost to any individual.
Any loss, non-fatal or fatal, or any medical expenses, which are caused byor result froma pre-existing condition are not eligible for reimbursement.
For an Injury, means a condition for which medical care, treatment, or advice was recommended by or received from a Physician or which was first manifested or contracted preceding the effective date of coverage.
For a Sickness, means a condition occurring during the ninety (90) day period prior to and including the individual effective date of insurance for which treatment by a licensed Physician has been sought or advised or for which symptoms exist which would cause a prudent person to seek diagnosis, care or treatment. A condition that is controlled (not exhibiting symptoms or requiring an adjustment of treatment or medication) throughout the ninety (90) day period by the taking of prescription drugs or medications and travel restrictions are not advised by a licensed Physician, then the medical condition will not be considered a Pre-existing Condition.
Note:
When requesting Cashless Payment service:
- you may need to grant permission to obtain Medical Records from medical providers to confirm eligibility.
- Additionally, you will need to submit receipts showing that your common carrier tickets were charged to your Butterfield / AAdvantage® Platinum MasterCard®.
- Receipts should be submitted within 30 days of requesting the cashless service.
- If receipts are not received within this timeframe, you will be responsible for payment of the medical expenses and will then need to submit a claim directly with the Insurance Underwriter.
Summary of Benefits

Return Of Dependent/Elderly:Up to $ 10,000 USD
- Benefits only apply during covered trips outside the cardholder's country of residence.
The remaining benefits only apply when the cardholder (and other eligible persons(s), if applicable) is at least 160 kilometers (100 miles) or more away from your place of residence or outside the cardholder’s country of residence.
Accident and Sickness Medical Expense Reimbursement:
MasterAssist Plus will provide reimbursement up to the maximums described below per eligible person, per eligible trip for covered medical expenses if he or she becomes ill or injured while traveling outside the country of residence and requires medical treatment by a physician.
Platinum Cardholder Only up to USD $25,000
Family Members up to USD $15,000
Covered Expenses:
The Company will pay benefits with respect to covered expenses as defined below under resulting from a sickness or injury, incurred outside the Insured Persons Home Country, necessitating medical treatment by a physician. Expenses that are specifically enumerated in the following list of charges, and not excluded in the exclusions section for MasterAssist Plus, shall be considered as covered expenses:
- Charges made by a hospital for room and board, floor nursing and other services, including charges for professional services, except personal services of a non-medical nature, provided, however, that expenses do not exceed the hospital's average charge for semi-private room and board accommodations;
- Charges made for diagnosis, treatment and surgery by a physician;
- Charges made for the cost and administration of anesthetics;
Charges for medication, x-ray services, laboratory tests and services, the use of radium and radioactive isotopes, oxygen, blood transfusions, iron lungs and medical treatment;
- Dressings, drugs, medicines and therapeutic services and supplies that can only be obtained with a written prescription from a physician or surgeon;
- Charges made for ground ambulance services;
- Dental treatment resulting from injuries sustained to sound, natural teeth subject to a maximum of USD $100 per tooth.
The charges enumerated above shall in no event include any amount of such charges which are in excess of regular and customary charges.
Schengen Coverage
When traveling to any of the Schengen countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Greece, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain or Sweden) during a Covered Trip, the Accident & Sickness Medical Expense Benefit limits will automatically increase to up to 30,000 Euros. Covered Trips to Countries other than Schengen will maintain the original Benefit limit as stated in the Benefit Schedule of the Master Policy.
2) Emergency Medical Evacuation
MasterAssist Plus will pay up to a maximum of USD $50,000 per eligible person, per eligible trip for the following expenses if any injury or sickness commencing during the course of a trip results in the necessary emergency medical evacuation of the Insured Person. An emergency medical evacuation must be ordered by a legally licensed physician who certifies that the severity of the Insured Person’s injury or illness warrants the emergency evacuation. Benefits are eligible for Insureds while he or she is traveling at least 160 kilometers (100 miles) or more from their usual place of residence or outside their home country.
Eligible expenses:
- Transportation; and
- Medical treatment, including medical services and supplies necessarily incurred in connection with the emergency evacuation.
- All transportation arrangements made for evacuating the Insured Person must be by the most direct and economical route.
- Expenses for special transportation must be: (a) recommended by the attending physician or (b) required by the standard regulations of the conveyance transporting the Insured Person.
- Expenses for medical supplies and services must be recommended by the attending physician.
Emergency evacuation means:
- the eligible person's medical condition warrants immediate transportation from the place where he or she is injured or sick to the nearest hospital where appropriate medical treatment can be obtained; or
- after being treated at a local hospital, the eligible person's medical condition warrants transportation to his or her current place of residence to obtain further medical treatment or to recover; or
- both (a) and (b) above.
Hotel Convalescence Costs
If the Insured Person is hospitalized outside of the Insured Person's Home Country for more than five (5) days and must remain, under medical advice, in a hotel (out of country, before medically released, starting immediately after being discharged from the Hospital) for additional convalescence, the Insured person will be reimbursed for the expense of the daily hotel room charges incurred (up to USD $150 per day) for a maximum of five days (per eligible trip).
Emergency Family Travel Costs
If the Insured Person is hospitalized outside of the Insured Person's Home Country for more than 5 days for a covered hospitalization, the Insured person will be reimbursed for the cost of a round-trip economy airfare to bring one immediate family member chosen by the cardholder to and from his or her bedside and up to USD $150 per day for daily hotel room charges incurred by the family member for a maximum of five days (per eligible trip), if the Insured Person is alone during his or her trip .
Repatriation of Remains
If an Insured person is traveling 100 or more miles away from an Insured Person's residence or outside of the home country and suffers a loss of life during a covered trip, MasterAssist Plus provides reimbursement for up to USD $25,000 per covered person, for treasonable covered expenses to return the eligible person's body to his or her home country (primary residence).
Eligible expenses include, but are not limited to, expenses for:
- Embalming
- Cremation
- Transport coffins
- Transportation
General Exclusions (What is NOT Covered)
The insurance coverage does not cover any loss, fatal or non-fatal, caused by or resulting from:
- suicide or any attempt thereat by the Insured Person while sane or self destruction or any attempt thereat by the Insured Person while insane;
- loss caused directly or indirectly, wholly or partly by:
- infections (except pyogenic infections which shall occur through an accidental cut or wound) or any other kind of Disease;
- medical or surgical treatment except as may be necessary solely as a result of Injury;
- any bodily Injury which shall result in hernia.
- war, civil war, invasion, insurrection, revolution, use of military power or usurpation of government or military power.
- service in the military, naval or air service of any country;
- the use, release or escape of nuclear materials that directly or indirectly results in nuclear reaction or radiation or radioactive contamination; or
- the dispersal, release or application of pathogenic or poisonous biological or chemical materials; or
- performing, including learning or instructing to perform, as the pilot or a crew member of any aircraft;
- being under the influence of, or any connection with drugs or intoxicants, unless taken under the advice of and as prescribed by a Physician; and/or drug abuse, addiction or overdose;
- committing or attempting to commit a felony;
- participation in any professional, semi-professional, or interscholastic team sports, any bodily contact sport or other athletic activity;
- participation in contests of speed using a motorized vehicle or bicycle;
- participation in skydiving/parachuting, hang gliding, bungee jumping, scuba diving, mountain climbing, pot-holing or while riding on a motorcycle;
- a pre-existing as defined in the definition section of this document;
- travel for the purpose of obtaining medical advice or treatment;
- sexually transmitted conditions, Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), Human Immune Deficiency Virus (HIV) infection;
- traveling against the advice of a physician;
- services, supplies or treatment, including any period of hospital confinement, which was not recommended, approved and certified as necessary and reasonable by a physician;
- pregnancy and all related conditions, including services and supplies related to the diagnosis or treatment of infertility or other problems related to inability to conceive a child; birth control, including surgical procedures and devices;
- routine physical or other examinations, where there are no objective indications or impairment in normal health and laboratory diagnostic or x-ray examinations except in the course of a disability established by the prior call or attendance of a physician;
- cosmetic or plastic surgery, except as the result of an accident;
- any mental, nervous or emotional disorders or rest cures;
- dental care, except as the result of injury to sound, natural teeth caused by accident;
- eyeglasses, contact lenses, hearing aids, and examination for the prescription or fitting thereof, unless injury or sickness has caused impairment of vision or hearing;
- congenital anomalies and conditions arising out of or resulting there from;
- expenses which are not directly related to an eligible sickness or injury occurring during an eligible trip;
- expenses incurred in connection with weak, strained, or flat feet, corns, calluses, or toenails;
- the diagnosis and treatment of acne;
- a connection with a deviated septum, including sub mucous resection and/or other surgical correction thereof;
- organ transplants;
- well child care, including examinations and immunizations;
- any medical, hotel convalescence, or emergency family travel expenses incurred within the Insured Person's country of domicile.
Definitions
Accident - means a sudden, unforeseen, uncontrollable and unexpected physical event to the Insured Person caused by external, violent and visible means occurring during the Policy Period.
Cashless Payment: Service offered by AXA Assistance whereby AXA Assistance will arrange for payment of eligible medical expenses or medical evacuations incurred while traveling directly with medical providers without the need for any disbursement from the cardholder.
Common Carrier Conveyance - means any land, water or air conveyance operated under a license for the transportation of passengers for hire for which a ticket has been obtained.
Covered Trip - means a trip where (a) the Insured Person’s full fare for a Common Carrier Conveyance has been charged to an active and valid eligible Card or tickets purchased with a Card that received mileage points for travel issued by a MasterCard International Member and said MasterCard International Member is located and doing business in the Territory prior to any Injury or (b) tickets purchased with a Card that received mileage points for travel (Credipuntos).
Dependent Children - means named dependent children, including adopted and step children, of the cardholder aged between birth and 18 years, or 23 years if attending as a full time student an accredited institution of higher learning, who are unmarried and who permanently reside with the cardholder and receive the majority of maintenance and support from the Insured Person.
Home Country - means the country where an Insured Person has his/her true, fixed and permanent home and principal establishment, and to which whenever he/she has the intention of returning.
Hospital means a place that: (a) holds a valid license (if required by law); (b) operates primarily for the care and treatment of Sick or injured persons; (c) has a staff of one or more Physicians available at all times; (d) provides 24-hour nursing service and has at least one registered professional nurse on duty at all times; (e) has organized diagnostic and surgical facilities, either on premises or in facilities available to the Hospital or a pre-arranged basis; and (f) is not, except incidentally, a clinic, nursing home, rest home, or convalescent home for the aged, or a facility operated as a drug and/or alcohol treatment center.
Injury - means bodily injury caused solely and directly by violent, accidental, external and visible means occurring while the policy is in force and resulting directly and independently of all other causes in loss covered by the policy.
Physician - means a doctor of medicine or a doctor of osteopathy licensed to render medical services or perform surgery in accordance with the laws of the country where such professional services are performed, however, such definition will exclude chiropractors, physiotherapists, homeopaths and naturopaths.
Pre Existing Condition means for an Injury, means a condition for which medical care, treatment, or advice was recommended by or received from a Physician or which was first manifested or contracted preceding the effective date of coverage. For a Sickness, means a condition occurring during the ninety (90) day period prior to and including the individual effective date of insurance for which treatment by a licensed Physician has been sought or advised or for which symptoms exist which would cause a prudent person to seek diagnosis, care or treatment. A condition that is controlled (not exhibiting symptoms or requiring an adjustment of treatment or medication) throughout the ninety (90) day period by the taking of prescription drugs or medications and travel restrictions are not advised by a licensed Physician, then the medical condition will not be considered a Pre-existing Condition.
Scope of Coverage - means during the course of a covered trip up to a maximum of 30 days. Such trip shall be deemed to have commenced when the Insured Person boards common carrier transportation for the purpose of going on such trip and continues until such time as the Insured Person alights from common carrier transportation for the purpose of returning from such trip.
Sickness - means illness or disease of any kind contracted and commencing after the Effective Date of this policy and causing loss covered by this policy.
Spouse - means the husband or wife of the cardholder who is living at the same residence as the cardholder as legislated by the local law where the corresponding MasterCard International Member operates.
Territory - means Latin America and Caribbean Region, which includes: Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, Anguilla, Antigua, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Grenadine Islands, Guadeloupe, Haiti, Jamaica, Martinique, Montserrat, Netherlands Antilles, Puerto Rico, St. Kitts-Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Trinidad & Tobago, Turks & Caicos Islands, U.S. Virgin Islands, Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama.
Limitations
AXA Assistance’s services are available worldwide, with the exception of those countries and territories which may be involved in an international or internal conflict, or in those countries and territories where the existing infrastructure is deemed inadequate by AXA Assistance to guarantee service.
Effective Date of Benefits
An eligible cardholder who has charged the common carrier transportation to the Butterfield / AAdvantage® Platinum MasterCard®, as well as the spouse and/or dependents, is eligible 24 hours a day from the day the cardholder starts the trip until midnight of the 30th day of the trip or until the cardholder returns to his or her city of residence, whichever is sooner.
A cardholder becomes eligible to receive the MasterAssist Plus benefits on the effective date of the program or the date the cardholder is issued a Butterfield / AAdvantage® Platinum MasterCard® card. The cardholder's spouse and any named dependent children(see Spouse and Dependent Children definitions) become eligible on the effective date of the program, the date the person becomes the spouse/dependent child, or the date the cardholder is issued a Butterfield / AAdvantage® Platinum MasterCard® card, whichever is latest.
Termination Date
For any eligible individual, the MasterAssist Plus benefits shall terminate:
- At midnight of the 30th day of the trip; or
- The date the cardholder returns to his or her city of residencewhichever comes first.
The MasterAssist Plus benefits will cease immediately on the termination date of the MasterAssist Plus benefits program or at the time the cardholder ceases to be an enrolled, international-use MasterCard cardholder in good standing, whichever is earlier. However, termination of the MasterAssist Plus benefits will be without prejudice to any request for reimbursement originating prior to the termination of benefits.
Procedures
For emergencies arising during the trip and prior to taking personal action where reasonable, you or your representative should call the MasterCard Assistance Centre:
- the cardholder or his or her representative can call toll free from the United States or Canada 1-800-307-7309, or collect (636) 722-7111.
- Information to be provided to the representative includes the caller's name, the cardholder's name (if not the same as the caller), the eligible MasterCard information and the patient's name (if not the same as the cardholder).
Information to be provided:
- The caller's name, the cardholder's name (if not the same as the caller), the eligible MasterCard information and the patient's name (if not the same as the cardholder).
- The name of the place and the telephone number where the MasterCard Assistance Centre can reach the cardholderor his or her representative.
- A brief description of the emergency, including the name, address and phone number of the attending physician and, if necessary, the family doctor, and the name, address and telephone number of the medical facility where the eligible person has been taken.
- The nature of help required.
In a life-threatening situation, the cardholder or his or her representative should always try to arrange for emergency transfer to the nearest hospital through the most appropriate and immediate means and then call the MasterCard Assistance Centre to provide the appropriate information as soon as possible.
A third-party provider medical team or other representatives shall need free access to the ill or injured covered person in order to assess his or her condition. On a case-by-case basis, the third-party provider medical team may decide whether an emergency evacuation is appropriate and may choose the date and means of the emergency evacuation.
On a case-by-case basis, MasterCard Assistance Center's medical team will decide whether an emergency medical evacuation is appropriate and will choose the date and means of the emergency medical evacuation.
How to File a Claim Under MasterCard’s MasterAssist Plus Insurance Benefits:
In the event of a claim, the following procedures should be followed:
Note that the Platinum Card operates on a “Cashless Arrangement” for the Medical Expense Benefits when notified at the time of claim. The contact numbers for this service are: +1 312 935 3561 and
+1 866 723 4536 to be handled by AXA Assistance, USA who will advise New Hampshire Insurance Company.
For all other MasterAssist Plus Claims:
You or the beneficiary must notify the Plan Administrator or the Insurance Company or someone acting on behalf of either, within 90 days or as soon as reasonably possible. Please contact the MasterCard Assistance Center.
You may call 1 866 252 7491 for assistance with filing a claim. The Plan Administrator or the insurance company, upon receipt of a notice of claim, will furnish to the claimant such forms as are usually furnished by it for filing proofs of loss.
You must then provide the Proof of Loss as follows:
- Written proof of loss and details including newspaper articles, death certificate, coroner’s report, medical bills and such after appropriate documents must be given to the Company as soon as is reasonably possible. This information should be furnished by the Insured, or his or her representative or his or her beneficiary, to insurance company.
- The MasterCard International Cardholder will send all information received (including, if applicable, transaction verification confirming the full fare for the Covered Trip had been charged to the covered account) to the offices of the insurance company:

The underwriting insurance company, New Hampshire Insurance Company (an AIG company), has the final authority on any claim decision.
Complete provisions of this plan are contained in MasterAssist Plus Policy # 009- 000196. This plan is underwritten by the New Hampshire Insurance Company (an AIG company).
If there are any discrepancies between this document or any other documents created by any entity (other than the insurance company) and the Master Policy, the Master Policy shall govern.
